Qi Gong (pronounce "chi gong") is a collective name for a wide spectrum of exercises and methods. It can be translated as energy work, energy cultivation or breathing exercise. It also has a range of different purposes: health maintanance; curing specific problems; healing others; longevity; studying nature; seeking wisdom or enlightenment; strengthening the body's weak spots for martial arts, etc.
The Qi Gong for Health classes focus on exercises that are relatively easy to learn, are low in impact or strain, can be practised daily, and give quick results in terms of energy awareness and health benefit. We focus on a number of Qi Gong sets that can easily be integrated into a daily routine at home or at work, and provide numorous supporting exercises to lay a good foundation for the energy work. We aim for a well-balanced class routine: gently working through all the structural layers; vitalising the organs; relaxation techniques; improving the quality of breathing, posture and mental focus; feeling, directing and circulating the Qi.
Most exercises can be done standing as well as sitting, and are therefore also suitable for people with disability or decreased mobility. Exercises that still prove to be difficult for any reason can often be adapted to suit the practitioner, so everyone can work according to his or her own ability. There is no age limit for Qi Gong exercise, although there is of course the risk of feeling younger after a good session!
